Here in Nashville yesterday I enjoyed a long chat with drummer Ed Thigpen. Every few years we're at the hotel bar at the same time and we catch up on news of mutual acquaintences and compare the jazz scenes in Scandinavia (where Ed resides) and San Francisco (where I reside). A chat with Ed is one way that I make my PASIC experience complete. Ed's a teacher as well as a player, and as a player who owns and has worked with his book and tape The Sound of Brushes, I feel it's a classic.

I'm in Nashville for the Percussive Arts Society International Convention. Among the performances and clinics I'm looking to catch are Dave Samuels, Rick Walker, Steven Schick, and Layne Redmond. And I'm hosting a networking event for members of PAS California Chapter, and seeing friends, and I'm going to catch some bluegrass at Nashville's Station Inn on Friday night.

I was fortunate to be present to hear some of the richest pop music of the past 100 years, performed last night at Davies Symphony Hall by Brian Wilson, his band, and the Stockholm Strings and Horns. As my brother put it, "once in a lifetime", unless I'm fortunate enough to see the man again. The concert was especially poignant for me as I'd seen Brian, his brothers, and Mike Love and Al Jardine play at the Hollywood Bowl 40 years ago, and I'd seen the 1973 edition of the Beach Boys (which was a great group), and the Love/Johnston Beach Boys about four years back. But there's no one like Brian, and there's no sound like the sound of a group with Brian in the heart of it, conducting it, enjoying it, shaping it. An incredible sound of voices and instruments I'll never forget.
