I was thoroughly entertained at the play "Love, Egos, Alternative Rock (L.E.A.R.)" on Friday night. Is the music business rampant with stereotypical bad behavior and personality types? At a certain level of success and recognition, fair to say, the answer is "yes". "L.E.A.R." plays on our knowledge of these behaviors and personalities (plus clothing and musical fashions since 1976) in a most clever way. Having Echo Beach's "Cal's Pals" playing during the party scene of the play, is a bonus.

Well, I didn't throw up (as I recall that's what Dennis Wilson did, the first time he heard the Beach Boys played on the radio) but last Friday at 2:45 p.m. was an exciting moment when Echo Beach was played on KGO-AM. Pete Wilson and Brad Kava played about 30 seconds of our recording of "Wave", then commented on the tune, this website, and a couple of our upcoming gigs. As a Bay Area musician for 27 years and a KGO listener even longer, hearing my band play on the radio was a satisfying moment.

Tomorrow is the 2nd Annual Oakland Day of Percussion which I've executive-produced (you know, that title goes to the person who controls the budget!). We have a great lineup of musicians and I've been getting a lot of phone calls from the public and reporters, so interest seems very high. And the weather is going to cooperate it appears. More here, after the event.

Trey Anastasio on the Charlie Rose show, speaking of Phish's breakup, made comments about the inertia of success, the perspective of 39 years of life, and the need to follow a personal and artistic path that makes sense -- some of the best remarks I've ever heard by a musician on those subjects.

on IFC, The Who - The Kids Are Alright: How differently I see this film today from the way I saw it in February 1979 at the movies. More on that, and on Randy Newman here *.

On DVD, Los Altos Country Club Grand Opening Gala which features Echo Beach's recordings of "Wave" and "Cal's Pals". I don't play golf anymore. But I enjoyed experiencing our band's music put to some great images from this event last month.

* On The Who and Randy Newman: The Kids Are Alright looks different to me now mostly due to knowing how it turned out for John (the movie was a posthumous tribute to Keith upon its release). The humor and the best music in the film are great as ever. Check out Keith during the recording session for "Who Are You?". The man was constantly irrepressible in front of a camera. Ah, the talents, the triumphs and the tragedies of The Who -- they'd make an opera. Oh, wait, Pete's already written some. Their music remains a brilliant reflection of energy and a desire to push the mind and the spirit, to see life both realistically and with hope. As for the body, a lot of sacrifice of their bodies went into making Who music and a show business career. Not unlike The Ramones, whose Rock 'N' Roll High School hit theaters the same month as this film. The Who hinted at a possible utopian future in their music; Randy Newman -- whose Live At The Odeon I also watched today -- has a point of view that acknowledges that love is present today (he paints it in dozens of shades), and that evil and neglect have existed forever. The future? Randy's outlook is as dark as Johnny Rotten's, because in Randy's music the future is absent. (Not counting his cartoon movie themes, where he's paid to be sunny).
