I'm looking forward very much to tonight's gig at Towles Cafe. Playing background music is so different from performing on a stage, a different set of challenges, a different set of rewards, a different range of dynamics to control -- really a wholly different type of music. Maybe it can be accurately called "showing off in miniature", in contrast to a stage performance which is intentionally put together to showcase a large dynamic range, and to capture attention.

I'm chart-writing on "Mr. Coaster" today. The chords in sequence are C, Am7, F, C/G, G7. Some melody written, more to go, plus harmony, plus section arrangements. The rhythm is guaguanco.
I'm also going to write a chart to guide an improvised piece (for the band) to play at Towles Cafe on Saturday.

Echo Beach has just been invited back to play at Towles Cafe in Burlingame. It's an intimate space to play some new material and try some acoustic experimentation (no synthesizer or elaborate percussion setup -- cannot block the food getting to the customers from the kitchen!), when we're there later this month and in April.

Tonight I will once again enter the realm of digital delay and looping, mic'ing the marimba to process its sound through an Akai Headrush pedal. We're playing a concert at Borders Pleasanton and for the first time in months at a gig I'll be modifying the marimba's sound this way. It's great fun.

In a jazz band, change is essential -- new material, new concepts. Our band needs to rev up to our next level of change and this week I'm going to focus on gathering together new material and new concepts for us. We're performing so much that there's been little time to incorporate the new but IT'S TIME!

The band's foray into metal territory (not changing our style, but in terms of the venue's regularly-featured genre of music) at the Octopus Lounge tonight is postponed by the closure of the bar for 20 days. Ah, show biz!

Last night, San Francisco Ballet, choreography by Balanchine, music by Tchaikovsky (Serenade in C Major for String Orchestra, Op. 48) and Stravinsky (Apollon Musagete) and Hindemuth (Theme and Variations - The Four Temperaments). Amazing dancing, and the orchestra sounded fantastic.

I had a good time last night hearing Orquesta D'Soul live for the 2nd time, at the Little Fox in Redwood City. From the balcony the view of the band was great, including of Brian the drummer. When Brian's playing with us in Echo Beach his playing is dialed back a bit from his style in the Orquesta, where it's dialed up to red-hot. For one thing he's got the timbales to cover. Yeah, Brian!!

Little Richard's promotion slogan for a while in the '70s was "The Beauty Is Still On Duty". I recall him saying things like "Shut up!! I invented rock 'n' roll!!", and wearing mirrored dresses (or were they tunics? I don't know). He certainly was a co-inventor. Today his hair may not be stacked as high as in 1970 but the slogan remains true. He's playing and speaking at SXSW (South By Southwest) this week.

At Yoshi's last night, the 9:30 set by The Mike Stern Band (Stern - guitar; Victor Wooten - bass; Dave Weckl - drums; Bob Franceschini - sax) blew up a storm with some great unison work, excellent soloing and some strong melodies in the mix. Those who came to hear these versatile top-tier players solo were amply rewarded for 100 minutes.
