M'Boom - LIVE AT S.O.B.'s - New York on CD. Recorded 2/9/92 this unique percussion ensemble (Max Roach, Joe Chambers, Omar Clay, Warren Smith, Roy Brooks, Fred King, Ray Mantilla, Eli Fountain) burns it up on Monk's and Kenny Clarke's "Epistrophy" (I believe that Monk would have dug the timpani), Monk's "Blue Monk", Green/Sour/Heyman's "Body and Soul", Janet Jackson/Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis's "Come Back To Me" and several originals. For me, this band is way up on the heights of jazz. M'Boom band member Warren Smith writes passionately about his experiences in the group here. Echo Beach plays "Morning/Midday" and "Jamaican Sun" by the group and we're about to re-enter "Rumble In The Jungle" back into our repertoire after a long layoff of the tune.
As I prepare to move to another house, this CD is one of the desert island discs I'm keeping near the stereo and out of a packing box.

Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, Sonny Rollins, Ray Bryant, Tommy Bryant, Charlie Persip - Sonny Side Up on CD. Dizzy, Sonny and Sonny make a great sound as a section and many of the solos here are extremely creative and entertaining. The rhythm section is excellent. The listener reviews on Amazon for this album are glowing and it's hard to disagree.

"Jazz History", said the head of SF Jazz last night, onstage before introducing Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Brian Blade, Dave Holland at the Masonic Auditorium. Jazz history, indisputably. Standout impressions for me: 1) how much Brian Blade reminds me of Max Roach behind the drumkit. Of minor import are his glasses, haircut and face; of major import is the way Blade strokes the kit in dozens of ways, using every part of the kit with invention, syncopating like your ears cannot believe, raising his elbows to touch everything. I felt like I was watching and hearing Max at moments and that from me is 100% a major compliment. Nevertheless Blade is an original drummer and a great one. 2) Herbie and Dave churning note clusters together. 3) Hearing a wonderful rendition of "Footprints". 4) Three of us (John, Justin, me) in Echo Beach were in the house last night and felt the privilege of being there.

Last Friday night, from the back row of Davies Symphony Hall I had the pleasure of hearing the San Francisco Symphony (one of the world's best by wide acclaim) perform with Nexus, arguably the best percussion ensemble of all time, on one of the most interesting pieces of late-20th-Century symphonic music, Toru Takemitsu's "From me flows what you call Time...".

I found a well-done, frequently-updated Nick Drake website here with recent interesting details including a new CD release last month and a mention of a recent BBC Radio documentary.
I like these pictures shot recently by Jos L. Knaepen, pictures of Dave Liebman, Adam Nussbaum and Steve Swallow in concert.

"Weary of the Waltz / and mashed potato schmaltz?" - Roxy Music on MusikLaden puts ennui out of your mind. Netflix has this DVD for rent. The DVD combines Roxy and T-Rex performances from the '70s in Germany on the "Beat Club" and "MusikLaden" tv shows. Roxy, true to their cinema-inspired name, performs a stage show and plays its soundtrack simultaneously. Their early energy when Eno was in the band may be compared to the David Bowie/Spiders From Mars band but for me, Roxy's vision and creativity are more ambitious, thought-provoking and entertaining. This is not the laid-back Roxy Music of Avalon. This is a band exclaiming vivid lyrical scenarios and philosophical statements on top of gorgeous rock 'n' roll noise, sounding like tomorrow's news. For anyone who enjoys British rock this DVD is essential viewing.

from Brother Mark, the DVD Bangles "A" spanning the band's mid-to-late '80s TV appearances around the globe. Favorite tracks? The ones that are played and sung live. As I saw for myself in Golden Gate Park last summer, this band absolutely kicks it, on stage.
