Friday's gigs (at 101 California St. (SF) and Nomad Cafe (Oakland)) were just about perfect. Thanks to David-Sean Lance for his guest performance on percussion with us at 101 Cal. The audiences at both venues were very welcoming. We had a great time playing for y'all! Thanks also to the staff at Nomad Cafe for their hospitality.

I just returned from John's house where we spent two hours working on "Bock to Bock" by The Montgomery Brothers. aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh...what a fine tune. I look forward to playing it live sometime soon. That is a picture of Wes Montgomery above.

Above: on the left: me. On the right, Echo Beach drummer (from 1994 to 2003) Steve Pompeo, snapped by my Sidekick as we finished breakfast in El Grenada today. Steve's playing drums and leading a band now in Lincoln, NE, his town of residence. We had many musical adventures together and I always welcome the chance to catch up with Steve.

Drummer Michael Pinkham is sometimes our drummer in Echo Beach. You can see him playing with us in the outdoors movie clip on our homepage. The band Diego's Umbrella for which Michael also drums will be playing LIVE on Alice 97.3 FM THIS Saturday night, July 23rd between 11:00 and 11:30 P.M. Check out some songs by Diego's Umbrella. They are a fun, hip, irreverent, turn-on-a-dime, and totally enjoyable entiry with which to groove. Check 'em live at The Park Chalet some Monday night at 8:00 too.

I liked hearing Buckwheat Zydeco's "Time Is Tight", John Phillips's "Mississippi" and Albert Ayler's "Angels" on Launch today. That's entertainment!

Mark Knopfler wrote "Money For Nothing" after overhearing workers in an appliance store. He directly quoted the workers in the song's lyrics. I almost believe Knopfler was a fly on the wall observing Ray Kroc dealing with the McDonald brothers back in the day, after just hearing the new track Boom, Like That. Knopfler still has the journalist in him, keenly feeling out scenes that only exist in history. Neil Tennant's another born-in-the-'50s former reporter (or was he a columnist only?), and another keen observer in his best songs IMO.

I enjoyed hearing the track Everywhere You Turn by The Bad Plus on Launch.

The tune "The Source" from Terence Blanchard's new album Flow -- eight minutes of dynamic tension between improvisation and arrangement -- I like the tune very much. Herbie Hancock produced the album. I heard the tune on Yahoo radio a service which continues to delight me. It may be that there are streaming music libraries out there that are just as good or better and I may be biased as an early adopter to Yahoo's radio service. In any case, I continue to be surprised and impressed with the depth of their library.

I read in the Paul Weller newsgroup on Yahoo that CBGB's may close next month. Is that bad news? I don't know. The good news I read is that Weller will be playing San Francisco's Warfield Theatre in September and I plan to go if I can. Tix on sale this Sunday at 10:00 a.m.

"Don't you know when culture is being thrust upon you?!" Thus spake Long John Baldry who helped teach the blues to participants in The British Invasion of the '60s, who cut some beautiful sides ("Black Girl", "Let's Burn Down The Cornfield", the title track) on his album It Ain't Easy, and who passed away last week.

Michael Brecker and co-conspirators including Jeff "Tain" Watts had a little too much time on their hands on the road...which led to the enormously low-budget movie epic Attack Of The iPods. The film is "Cheapnis" realized, to use a Frank Zappa term. Mr. Brecker is currently not able to make low-budget road movies as he's hospitalized for a serious illness and his management company has put out the word that "get-well wishes can be sent to info@michaelbrecker.com".

Your Help is Needed -- The Pride of Oakland Drum and Bugle Corps currently does not own horns, and an opportunity has just come up to purchase used horns from another corps. Oakland youth and the Oakland community will be served by donations to the Horn Purchase Fund. You can make a major difference in a young person's life. If you wish to assist please contact me at my email address. Thank you very much.
