| “The musician is the document. He is the information itself. The impact of stored information is transmitted not through records or archives, but through human response to life. And that response is ongoing, in the air, everywhere, an alternative constantly available to those with ears to hear…” – Ben Sidran, 1980, as quoted on the website for Keepintime, a CD and DVD featuring Earl Palmer, Paul Humphrey, DJ Shadow, and other artists in a meeting of the minds leading up to December, 2002. | |

Woodshedding on "Slip Away". One of my favorite chord sequences in a tune, in any genre. I'm interested in turning the arrangement inside out for our band, keeping the chord sequence and most of the rhythm and all of the melody.

Yahoo! Launch videos: The Black Eyed Peas - "Let's Get It Started"; Neil Young - "Rockin' In The Free World" (and I would segue that into The Police's "Synchronicity II"); Little Village - "She Runs Hot"; The Black Eyed Peas - "Hey Mama" (fun, imaginative, with a sense of community, yeah); Beastie Boys - "Sabotage" (in my all-time video Top 10 from the time I saw it in '94; where did they find those wigs? from the same polyester factory where they found the ties, shirts and slacks? I think so.); Lindsey Buckingham - "Countdown"; INXS - "This Time".

I've just been listening on Amazon to song clips of Miroslav Vitous's Universal Syncopations on the ECM label, with thoughts of purchasing it (there's none of Vitous's solo work on iTunes that I could find). This project included John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Jan Garbarek and Jack DeJohnette and was released last September. I've enjoyed this bassist's work since I saw him with Weather Report in '73. He's done some great recordings with Terje Rypdal, who I seem to promote incessantly in this blog, but I feel he deserves it.
Today I've also been checking out tracks from the new Diana Krall CD (a tip from Steve W.), Steve Swallow's Damaged in Transit album, They Might Be Giants' Indestructible Object, as well as the album Keepintime: A Live Recording with Paul Humphrey, James Gadson and Derf Reklaw on the drums and percussion.

One of my favorite pieces of music recorded in the '90s, James MacMillan's "Veni, Veni, Emmanuel" with Evelyn Glennie on percussion, after I burned a CD of the piece for my mother, who has become a greater fan of orchestra/percussion combos after seeing Nexus rehearse with the SF Symphony recently.

Sunday, it was Squeeze's A Round And A Bout on the car stereo while motoring to gigs around the Bay. A great live album, reflecting the great live band that Squeeze was in the early '90s.

What happens when the U.S. Military orders an MP3 player made to its specifications? (Hint: do NOT stand in front of this thing!). What happens when Brian Wilson decides to re-record and complete the album Smile? The answers are on pages 10 and 62 of the July 12, 2004 issue of Newsweek. My comments are here.
