At Sonoma State U. on Tuesday some people asked what tunes were in the setlist. Here they are: "Merengue" by Michael Lloyd, "Freddie Freeloader" by Miles Davis, "Moanin'" by Bobby Timmons, "One Note Samba" by Antonio Carlos Jobim, "St. Thomas" by Sonny Rollins, "Afro Blue" by Mongo Santamaria, "Killer Joe" by Benny Golson, "Cal's Pals" by Blair Helsing.

Once again thanks to Cato's Ale House and those in the House last night for a warm welcome, and graciousness when a short circuit in the power cord to my vibes tripped the circuit breaker panel in the kitchen (twice!). Today I got the whole power cord replaced. We look forward to continuing the band's monthly residency at Cato's. Great to see Jason there last night too.
Echo Beach plays live Wednesday December 7th at Cato's Ale House in Oakland from 6 to 9 P.M.
Echo Beach plays live Thursday December 8th at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco from Noon to 1 P.M.

As bracing as my morning coffee: The Cranberries' "Zombie". As compelling as a sunrise: Pat Metheny and such a fine band playing "Never Too Far Away" -- both on Launch radio.

Outstanding listening streaming at me from Yahoo's Launch Radio servers today: John Coltrane's "Africa" and a very lo-fi, scratchy version of Stan Kenton and an orchestra live in New York doing "Lonely Woman" that was fantastic!

On CD: The Thrills: So Much For The City. This album could hardly miss with me since the sound combines some of the best stylistic elements of Buffalo Springfield, Shoes, The Cowsills, The Monkees, Poco and other highly proficient pop music makers. The California-focused lyrical themes don't hurt either.

I've just begun reading a very fine book, Positively 4th Street by David Hajdu, chronicling the intersecting lives of Bob Dylan, Richard and Mimi Fariņa, and Mimi's sister, Joan Baez. There's much to compel me in this book: it's very well-written, loaded with quotes and telling anecdotes; I'm quite interested in all four of the major characters and their music and motivations, I lived in Greenwich Village for part of the summer of '68, when the cultural ripples of the book's time period were still very evident; and my mother was a singer in the Village for a short time in the '70s. I've seen performances by the main characters except for Richard. Joan Baez influenced my social consciousness when I was a teenager by speaking about Amnesty International from the stage. I could go on. It's a great read.

Friends Mark and Mylea threw a '70s theme party over the weekend. I went as Bobby, the Unknown Ramone. Below is the evidence. Unseen in the picture are the authentically-frayed knees of my jeans and my authentic 53rd and 3rd sneakers. Yes I went "Whole Ramone". This was an easy costume to choose (not an easy one to buy but that's another story) 'cause a few months after "I Wanna Be Sedated" was released I was singing the song while playing the drums in "Sharp" in the finer venues around town (Mabuhay Gardens and Palms Cafe among them). Never in costume, so this weekend was "closing the loop", or maybe "eating the chicken vindaloo I cooked in '79" is a better phrase. I dunno. I gotta go. Slugs and snails are after me.

There is no doubt that Bruce Springsteen has had an effect on American culture. For a deeper look at how Bruce's music and outlook have affected other thinkers, check this out -- three days of symposia next month centered on The Boss. This is not fluff as you will see.
Ongoing
Your Help is Needed -- The Pride of Oakland Drum and Bugle Corps currently is borrowing horns, and an opportunity has just come up to purchase used horns from another corps. Oakland youth and the Oakland community will be served by donations to the Horn Purchase Fund. You can make a major difference in a young person's life. If you wish to assist please contact me at my email address or donate directly on The Pride of Oakland website. Thank you very much.
