Our setlists last Friday at Ned's and at Bear Republic Brewing Company included the list below.

Thursday, August 26, 2004 8:10:42 AM
Our setlist yesterday at Ned's Bookstore was: "Morning/Midday", "Key West Intermezzo", "Girl From Ipanema", "Fall", "Viva Tirado", "Killer Joe", "Delicate Creature", "Bright Size Life", "Jamaican Sun", "Blue Bossa", "Afro Blue", "Tune Up", "Place To Be", "Footprints", "Wave", "So What", and "St. Thomas". Percussionist Yaya Maldonado sat in with us, on a hot day in Ned's balcony as the students of UC Berkeley bought their books.

Our setlist yesterday at The Plaza at 425 Market Street, SF was: "Place To Be", "Key West Intermezzo", "Merengue", "Killer Joe", "Delicate Creature", "Freddie Freeloader", "Wave", "One Note Samba", "Cal's Pals" and "So What". It was a foggy noontime but the crowd response warmed it up for us.

Our setlist last night at Borders Los Gatos was: "Place To Be", "Killer Joe", "One Note Samba", "Bright Size Life", "Girl From Ipanema", "Freddie Freeloader", "Wave", "Afro Blue", "Cal's Pals". Chris Dugan sat in on bass with us. On Chris's own Chris Dugan Project CD, Bar Code is a recording of one of my favorite tunes, Gil Scott-Heron's "Lady Day And John Coltrane". Watch for Chris around the Bay. He is a guitar teacher, as well.

Last night, John and Justin and I rehearsed "Ironicle" ("a Western tune", I said, struck by the sounds of the guitar), Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage", "Cordovado" by Jobim; Wes Montgomery's "Sundown", "All The Things You Are", and "Alone Together".

I'm woodshedding Justin's tune "Ironicle" and preparing to transcribe Frank Zappa's "Cosmic Debris".

iTunes: Manfred Mann - "The Mighty Quinn"; The Moody Blues - "Ride My Seesaw"; Fairport Convention - "Tale In Hard Time"

Thursday, August 26, 2004 8:15:10 AM
Current favorite tune on the iPod: Caetano Veloso - "It's Alright Ma, I'm Only Bleeding" from his recent album A Foreign Sound.

As I transfer increasing numbers of CD tracks to iTunes, the iPod gets more and more entertaining. A playlist I made for today: "Make Me Smile" - Chicago; "Drive South" - John Hiatt at Budokan; Tim Buckley's "Song to the Siren" - Robert Plant; "Sweet Marie" - Thin Lizzy (these four tracks honoring the birthday today of James Pankow, John Hiatt, Robert Plant, Phil Lynott); "Slavery Days" - Burning Spear; "Jamaica Farewell" and "Nature Boy" - Caetano Veloso; "Money For Nothing" - Dire Straits; "For Michael Collins, Jeffrey And Me" - Jethro Tull; "The Daily Planet" - Arthur Lee and Love, from last year's The Forever Changes Concert; "La Valse Moderne" - Mark Isham, from the outstanding soundtrack to Alan Rudolph's film The Moderns; "What Have I Done To Deserve This?" - Dusty Springfield and Pet Shop Boys (this track for me is their [Neil's and Chris's, not Dusty's] outstanding achievement); Medley: "It's Only A Paper Moon/This Time The Dream's On Me" - Wesla Whitfield. I have worked through trial and error to get the iTrip transmitter to work with FM radios and the iPod. I could write a better user guide for the iTrip than the manufacturer's own guide. It's a tricker device than their documentation reveals. Now that I've grokked its operation and accepted its limitations I like the iTrip very much.

My first iPod use today. A playlist for the day to mark the occasion: "Three Colors" by Kit Watkins; "Ipanema", "Nu Ballad", "Space Island", "Feel The Bass" by Rob Wasserman; "I'm Holdin' On To Love (To Save My Life)", "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)", "Rock This Country!" by Shania Twain; "Afro Blue" and "Tumbao" by Cal Tjader from Monterey Concerts; "You And I" and "I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)" by Stevie Wonder; a reprise of "Three Colors" by Kit Watkins. An iTrip FM transmitter is my iPod accessory. I'll post more about the iTrip later (my experiences with it were mixed today).

Videos on Launch: Beastie Boys - "Intergalactic", Bjork - "Hidden Place", ZZ Top - "Stages", Bela Fleck - "Vix 9" (inspiration from the aforementioned ZZ Top clip). I'm going to stop watching Launch video for a while. The player crashed my laptop three times. I switched over to listening to WFMU-FM on iTunes Radio. The station also streams over the web, and right now they're playing vinyl (it may be a Mozart piece). I mention this only because it's so rare to hear clicks or pops on the radio anymore. No problem!

Robert Fripp and Andy Summers - Bewitched on vinyl. To me this album and the Fripp/Summers collaboration I Advance Masked are masterpieces of collaboration, engineering, humor, depth, and dynamics, and brilliantly representative of the appealing aspects of both guitarists' styles. The album contains Fripp's tendency toward menacing, relentless ostinatos, minor keys and dark colors (and also his playfulness) blended with Summers's use of varied sonic colors and textures (and also his playfulness). I tend to listen to these records more than any whole King Crimson or Police album, and more even than Fripp's Exposure which I also greatly enjoy. Just for balance, here are some opinions the opposite of mine about this record.

For another three-year term I'll be continuing as President of the California Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society. I have learned in the past three years that the responsibility challenges me to think creatively all the time, and for this I'm grateful, along with seeing the satisfaction and value that people receive from the Society's and Chapter's services. The really creative part? I know that I want to see our Chapter exceed its previous accomplishments; exactly how will that be done? I don't know yet!
